View Full Version : Looking for Horsepower Hungry Rune Owners

Vitki04

I have come up with the K&N air filter adapter for the Rune (see vendors area). The adapter increases the horsepower by 10% and also reduces the amount of soot. I am looking for at least a dozen people to purchase this adapter so that I can offer it at a low cost. I will not invest over $3500 for ten of these adapters and then try to sell them. Any help in getting this project started would be greatly appreciated.

I would be interested , depending on the cost of course & what type of mod would have to be made to the bike.
Let me know.

Danny, I’m not necessarily the most mechanically inclined. Is this system something I can install?

Vitki04
05-28-2004, 05:44 AM
Thanks BigRedRider,
Rune108 the cost on the kit is $365.00 S&H is included for the first 12 orders.
Sitedata as far as the install the biggest job is to remove the gas tank, the air filter is under it, then remove the top of the air box (which is just a few screws) then remove the OEM air filter, install the lower part of the adapter, the K&N filter, and the top part of the adapter and screw everything back together. remove the rubber gromet that holds the air temp sensor from the original air box , install it on the adapter top piece and plug the air temp back in. The only part that you have to be carfull is removing the tank.

Now if you want to take it to you dealer you can, My dealer told me that it will not void my warranty, so you can take the kit to them if they are going to service your Rune anyway

at same test conditions and same dyno/operator with and without your K&N mod, that substantiates the 10% gain? Please post.

Thanks,
ZM

Will be very interested if you can provide that.

No ZM I don't ,
all I have is the dyno score after the mod. I have place a message on the old board asking if anyone had dynoed the Rune and all the answers were from 92HP to 98HP and mine dynoed at 107HP so it safe to say 10% increase .

Hi , just a couple of more questions, 1. is the K&N company involved with this mod or is this something of a private adventure. 2. if you were to clean the soot off of the mufflers completly how many miles would you have to ride or have ridden the bike since the K&N filter and how much soot was left on the mufflers?
thanks

Thanks Ken,
Rune 108 , No K&N is not directly involve with this Rune adapter what I have done is I have found a K&N filter used on a car that has the same filter area as the Rune and built an adapter to the air box of the Rune.
The K&N filter that I use will not fit the Rune OEM air box.
As for the amount of soot left on the muffler I want to say that I start to see a light brown discoloration on the muffler at about 3 to 400 miles .
Basicaly I clean the exhaust twice a month compare to every 2 days.

But we still need at least 3 more orders before we can start machining.
Come on guys, be one of the few to have the fastest Rune,
don't forget it will reduce the amount of soot on your exhaust and the K&N air filter will increase your gas mileage.

Hey , just thought of something, how often do we have to service the new air filter with that oil stuff, because that will require removal of the tank right?
Thanks :?:

Danny, I sure to hell hope this thing comes with clear installation instructions. I’ve got to give them to Thumbs Duffs McGee, my crackerjack lawnmower mechanic, if I can catch him when he’s sober!

Some of you will remember McGee, he’s the guy that took two days to bleed my break lines.

Hey Rune108: I have k&N's on my truck and the GF's car. Normally you only service them every 50,000 for street riding (30,000 miles if you drive in off road, Dusty Conditions allot)

Only one more to go !! :D

Vitki04, If your still looking for people I'm in, I have a K&N air filter on my 98 VFR 800 and it works great. Just out of curiosity you have adapted a K&N filter from a car to the Rune air box, have you given any thought to adapting a "Tornado" (the after market product that makes the air coming into the filter spin, increasing efficiency) to the air box? I have them installed on my car and van and it makes quit a difference in performance.

Actually Steven you are # 15 , but it is ok I 'll set you up just like anyone else,
Actually since these K&N adapters are only advertised on this site and you have to be a member to be able to order them at that price, the off site cost will be $395.00.

When I replied I didn't go to page two of the thread and didn't see the others make the 10 minimum order number you needed. Anyway, I think making the beast breath easier is better for the engine and environment.

OBTW, when should I have those new little plates?

Hi Chuck,
I'm pleased that you have joined the few who will have this extra HP.
As far as you paying the same price as what I paid for mine....No I don't think so..... I wouldn't do that to you!!! because since I was the first one to come up with the idea and the prototype it end up costing me $780.00 for mine, I dont think it would be fare for me to make you pay that even if you begged me... :D

For those of you that bought the air filter adapter, did this thing work?

SiteData
11-04-2010, 04:10 PM
I bought one of these years ago, before I drilled holes in the exhaust.
I noticed a slight difference in the sound, a bit deeper. As for additional
response if there was any it wasn’t noticeable.

I used it for about 2 months... It sounded like you were going harder/faster... but that was about it. I am back to stock filter and cover.

FYI: This adapter and plate configuration offers nothing other than you will know how to remove your tank and make you a little more comfortable with tools around the tank area, for new members this post is really old and could actually be friendly locked down;as not to confuse anyone. Another filter done elsewhere also offers no HP but it's modification could be and is harmful to any Rune applications (would allow water into the motor area) top of the engine ie: through the guages, under front of tank and however water can get under around or near the tank. Myself and a couple of others spoke with the K&N company and some other affiliates(7 years ago) who make filters and there was NO interest from either company, they make such good filters and we'd never have to replace them cause they last forever and have great warranties, not enough would be sold or ordered to warrant them to even consider such a small order. Plus there would be no soot difference as promised in the original filter offered,it is what it is until such a filter could be made. :attention: if we keep the dementions of our OEM filter handy and K&N or a company as good as they are make a new filter close to our dementions (BINGO) a perfect fit would mean NO modifications necessary, and thats a good thing! Some time next week I will attemp to speak with them and ask what thier closest size is and maybe even ask them if they might now have an interest in a bigger order. I will create a new post and not offer any information on this thread. Please no offers or orders,it just might not happen. One thing I will try and invite them to this site if they show the least bit of interest in our wanting of a K&N filter and than we can show our own interest and they can see the need for our applications. Lets cross our fingers. The OEM filter in this case is far superior to any filter application out there! dog

Just to let all know, I bought one of the adaptors years ago and didn't install it as the new filter area was 20% smaller than the stock filter which voided the 20% gain from the less restrictive flow.

Instead I gutted the stock element from the stock holder and used that for the filter adaptor for a K&N that was equal to the stock dimension thus gaining the 205 air flow increase suggested by K&N.

Here is the results, sounds great, but makes the bike a tic slower than stock as tested aginst DiverDave several years ago at the West Coast Rally in Tahoe.

So the only advantage is the clean and reuse factor.

You can open up the factory top piece if you like but I would stray away from the totally open top or drilled out top piece for the reasons stated by Dog about letting water enter the engine in heavy rains.

Enjoy

Jack

I didn't watch the footage but yep 'thats it' as mentioned 25% less filter then stock, less equals less air=equals poor preformance,if one has done this mod go back to stock. If the original materials have been tossed or wrecked or somebody drilled their air box-it is real cheap to return to stock just under fifty bucks. I'm still going to speak with the design/tech department. If I get anything interesting look for a new post on filters. This one is dead.........................ps.............as for HP increase The Rivco 6 pack at one time claimed 15 extra HP with the new exhaust and no soot what-so-ever,well the HP is up but more like 7-10 extra HP and never any soot, remove baffles and maybe another 1 HP and still no soot mess. The sound is Big&throaty-kinda like a 6 or 8 cyl beefed up! A tuned note of its own, nothing like a Harley at all and doesn't sound like there are leaks in the exhaust either. Your buddies on GOLDWINGS will make you start your Ride first:1st:

I just took the restrictor plate off the top of my air box.. It added 23 hp and 65lbs of torque, it gets 53 mpg and has a top speed of a 173 mph..And women have throwing themselves at me as well.
