View Full Version : Luggage rack for the rune

Okay, I rode 3000 miles with a backpack on!! I am going to a custom bike builder to have a rack built for my bike. Here's what I'm thinkin. Starting about 3 inches forward of the back of the seat, create a chrome 4 bar rack that follows the lines of the seat. So, kind a v at the start of the rack then haveing about an 8-10 inch rack ending in a upturned reverse v. This should compliment the aggresive looks of the bike. The builder says it should run about 250-300 bucks for all of it. Let me know what you all think

I like the idea. Post photos when you have it made.

I look forward to your photos of the luggage rack. It is a problem if one needs to travel any distance. I bought a tank bag from moto direct for about $50 and It is surprising how much it holds. It stays in place via the magnets and does not scratch the tank. The luggage rack sounds better providing the appearance of the bike is not compromised

Try to design something independent of the seat (stock, I assume) so that it could be used no matter what seat you've got. Just my two cents.

tfonner,
I had a similar idea but for a back rest that could be positioned easily whether one has the front or rear handle bars. I have the forward and am okay with the feel, but thought some type of back support would make for a better and longer ride.
I was thinking about using the seat to actually help support the rest and/or rack. I am very curious on what the rack will look like. Maybe adding an adjustable back rest (movement forward or movement back).
Just a thought. Let me know what you think.

This was an idea I had, based off the Rune bags we're in the process of making now, the idea being having storage on both sides, plus a trunk on top, and the back rest. The design would kind of pick up on the cowlings behind drivers on older Jags.

The idea of the luggage rack sounds kinda cool too (sort of like those on a Porsche Speedster).

no tent needed, just a sleeping bag and some plastic

Besdides that I like the design...also, would the back rest be adjustable? Kind of being able to move out forward more?

Hey Rune-Giant...I love that design. Is it possible to incorporate an adjustable backrest on the front end of the cowling?

Rune Giant
09-22-2006, 01:06 PM
Anything is possible.

Btw, last night I designed a pretty cool little rack too (this thread sparked my imagination), which I'll post some pics of tonight when I get home. It's pretty cool, very retro and fits the style of the bike to a T.

Actually, we have a small tent my son got that will fit two standard sized adults (i.e. 5'8" or so). Packed away it measures about 18 inches in length (maybe less), and about 6 inches in diameter.

I'm glad we are looking at a luggage rack....butttt... I wouldn't put wood on my Rune...if the platfrom were a chrome stamped or machined piece similar to the Honda luggage rack for the 1300 VTX...I would consider it... Just my thoughts...... I've seen too many wooden racks (if that is what the rendering shows) totally fall apart...after they get looking bad... Barbeque grills.... :biker:

Rune Giant
09-23-2006, 02:44 PM
Thanks for the feedback. I had gone with the wood because that's what we use on our old VW buses, and it looks good as well as lasts quite a while (if taken care of...), plus I think it adds to the retro feel of the bike. Though it wouldn't work for any colors but the black cherry.

I'll have to take a look at the VTX rack.

I'd stay away from the stamped metal, too much drag on the bike.

rune_giant,
No offense intended, but someone must have told you this rack looks good. My honest opinion,.....UGLY!
I liked the bags and the top carrier with back rest, but this should never be a part of the RUNE....some other bike maybe......not!

My wife thought this was a cooling rack for pastry. She uses this all the time to cool off her baking items..

My rack will be all chrome and will be attached directly to the finder. So yes there will be holes in the finder but I really want to use the bike as a touring bike!!

Rune Giant
09-25-2006, 01:29 PM
Sheesh. Okay, I get it. No lawn chairs or cooling racks.

The rune bags are currently under way, first the Mega series (and yes, I get the warts thing...but there are a lot of people here who like them). Right now they're being modeled. And Ray, the fender is in good hands at the fabricator's. I should be able to get that back to you in a couple weeks, and I want to really thank you for being generous enough to let me borrow it.

Rak is gone, bags full steam ahead!

If you want to do fast modelling, find a company with a Z Corporation 3-D printer. Not only does it print in 3D, it's full colour. See the following URL:

http://www.zcorp.com/

Their model Z810 should do the job. I'm thinking of buying a Z510.

Rune Giant

Thanks Asacuta..

I had looked into Rapid Prototyping (both the version that uses powders and the one using liquids). Spendy, very spendy, and I don't need color output since we'll have to take the prototype and get it professionally painted with the Rune colors (PPG). RP is great for smaller stuff and reasonable (sort of). A friend had a model made of one of his characters from a 3D model. Only 10 inches tall and if I remember, something like $150 bucks (it was a new company too, giving deals to early customers).

Let me know though if you do get a printer, I'd be interested in working with you on other products (the smaller version of the bags for instance).

OK, time to pipe in on this.

IMHO the only thing uglier are the
two up Corbin seats.

Guys, this is a solo bike not a two up
cruiser, touring bike. Sure a tank bag
or T-Bag that attaches to a backrest works
but they also come off when you reach your
destination and want to do some riding.

Changing the lines of such a beautiful bike
to me is just sad and sticking big ugly 'worts'
on it is sinful.
Well said

Lets face it, the Rune wasn't designed to have any sort of rack attached to it. I admit that I wish at times I had some storage but given the fact that any attachment makes the bike look rediculous, I'll stick with the storage in my clothing. For those who are in great need of the addtional space, I would suggest a backpack as well. For one, it will hold a lot more stuff than any of the other rack or bag ideas that have been shared, and two, the Rune will remain a Rune. I think someone should work on designing a slick backpack. BigV

I would venture a guess that those who are opposed to bags for the Rune also ride alone. My wife and I ride double. On overnight trips she does wear a backpack. Even with a minimal change of clothes and liners for our jackets, the pack gets quite heavy over a long ride. Her shoulders ache and it makes the overall trip a little less enjoyable (married guys can guess why). =;-)
For the single guys, a 2-up seat allows you to offer a ride to that honey eye-balling you from the end of the bar.

Rune giant's bags at least fit the bike. If you have to add luggage, it may as well compliment the bike and not look like an afterthought. Let's face it, regardless of what brand of bike people buy, they will always want to change something about it (whether for practicle or personal reasons).

Keep up the good work Rune_giant.

Thanks Rob.

As far as a backpack that's cool, I suggest you check out one of my friend's sites, http://www.axio-usa.com. They make the Axio brand of bags, and I know they were working on a pretty cool tank bag as well, that converts into a backpack as well.

As far as the look I have several first place trophys with my TWO UP CORBIN EQUIPED RUNE. as far as safty the rune has the largest braking system ever put on a motorcycle. here is what i would like as far as luggage carrying ability goes..i would like to see a hidden quick release mount system for a set of the saddle bags of my choice. i personally would not want to have bags permently mounted on the bike for cosmetic reasons. however if some one could develop a new rear fender sub frame that we could plug in some saddle bag mounts, quickly, that would be right up my ally..

You are somewhat mistaken on the side car issue. Several motorcycle manufacturers including Honda & Harley, offer side car options and suggest certain modifications be added in order for safe operation. Adding a side car to a motorcycle involves much more than just attaching it. There are alterations that are made to the bikes suspension which allow it to handle the load. In fact, ones bike should never be driven without the side car once it has been retrofitted with the suspension upgrades as the handling without the side car is quite awkwark. As far as you riding two up with a whopping 450lb load and claiming unchanged handling charateristics is quite rediculous. It's no different than someone chiming in to tell us that he/she has been riding the Rune with 60lbs in the front and rear tires and has never had a blow out and claims better handling. A few eyebrow would be raised don't you think. Although the manufacturers are perhaps conservative on their numbers, I for one would feel very uncomfortable for any length of time with the ones you claim to be safe. BigV

I bought my Rune because I love it...I love to ride it...I hate seeing it in the garage each day in the winter....I do haul a passenger from time to time...use the Corbin rumble seat...which also allows me to use this bike as a tour bike...with a T bag (ggod for a week for 2 people) on the flip up backrest and a duffle bag on the passenger seat (when I ride single)...which then doubles as a backrest while on longer trips...I can travel anywhere... True..this bike is designed as a one up day cruiser... which is exactly why many...who are not as committed as some of us..tire of this bike quickly and sell it for a terrible loss.... What ever anyone does to ride and enjoy this bike is ok with me....I can't wait for the bags...I've been putting my pennies in an envelope for a couple months now awaiting the production... From time to time I take off my Rumble Seat and ride stock...and I really do love that too.... 27,500mi and climbing...hugs and kisses. :biker:

RedValk

agree with Rich on his assesment. For me, trailering to LONGER distance destinations and bringing the kitchen sink in the truck and trailer...then riding my a$$ off when i get there....works for me 8)

For others, adding seats, luggage racks, bags, etc. may be the ticket? for some, tank bags and tbags and such? Hey, i won't even add the RIVCO pegs .....EVEN THOUGH I KNOW FUNCTIONALLY, IT WOULD MAKE THE BIKE MUCH MORE COMFORTABLE ON LONGER RIDES!!! (yes, i was shouting....trying to clearly confess a point!). I just can't get over the looks of it. But the few longer rides i have made (for me....300-400 miles)...makes me think SOME day....MAYBE...just MAYBE...i might buy those pegs and "star/octopus" mount system....JUST for the long ride. i'd have to remove them IMMEDIATELY upon completing the long ride. That's how much i don't like the look of them.

BUT THAT SAID, I have a Windvest on my bike, cause i tried for three weeks to ride without a shield....but Mr. Vanity/half helmet here just can't take it riding with a half helmet and no shield. So i HAD to put a shield on. I chose the Windvest, cause it altered the lines of the the bike THE LEAST. The other shields, TO ME, ruin the lines of the bike. BUT AGAIN, to some, me putting that Windvest on ruined the lines of the bike.

So there you have it. Some will get the bags. Some may get a luggage rack. some might have dual seats. Some a windshield. Some the RIVCO pegs. Some will ride far. Some won't. Some will ride two up. Some won't. Some will trailer. Some won't.

In the end, what does it really matter? Do what YOU WANT. YOU bought the bike for YOU. Not for someone else. WHO CARES what someone else thinks? FORK THEM. Do what YOU want and push on.

Don't worry....be happy

(oh, over 21,000 on my Rune now....for this Trailer King. Over 16,000 on Sherry's, for that Trailer Queen :P :D )

We're really considering using the "Ghost Brackets" for the RuneBags. The mounts will go on the bike in place of the signals (in the two holes), then the bracket slides on and locks. Unlock to take the bags inside. Once the bags are off you can always take the mounts off and out your signals back on.

I'am sad to hear that the rune you sold to Pat from united cycles burned up in the cabazon fire, I had been looking forward to hearing the drilled exhaust modification on his bike once he had put it all back together.

Although I dont know Pat I feel awfully bad that he lost his rune to the fire and I hope they catch whoever started this fire real soon so they can start to pay for the path of destruction they left behind.
