View Full Version : Not really a tech thing- word of advice for Corbin seats

If you own or plan on buying a Corbin seat, get some clear 3M vinyl film, used for clear car bras, and put it right where the seat comes in contact with your tank. My Rune had a rumble seat. When I removed it, what I thought was grime turned out to be faded, rubbed out and pitted paint in a nice horizontal band where the seat was against the tank.

A little insurance in case you switch seats. The single OEM seat for now won't work because of this big ugly mark.

Now I need to either take the tank off and get it painted, or get a spare so I don't have a lot of downtime with the Rune.

Sounds like good advice. Where is the best place to get said product?

Trim-Line in Calgary should be able to set you up. They did my Aston Martin. Actually they redid my AM after another shop royally screwed up the job.

Look way back and there is all kinds of info on this matter,ie where to get it how to get it and how much-maybe 2 years ago. Any dealer has it and most off road accessories car shops have it- Truck accessory shops,if you have any kind of relation ship with any auto dealer they may just give you some for free. There is also art supply shops, you can put on with water and squeegee it on and peel off at anytime. Old news is good news. Good for carrying luggage tank bags etc etc! Hobby Lobby comes to mind also Michaels arts supplies. Cheap stuff! But beneficial.dog

Can't you just go to an Auto parts store that sales automotive paint etc and get this clear tape. Isn't it the same thing they use on thresholds on door of jeeps etc...??

The 3M product is somewhat overpriced and there are others out there without the 3M name that can be found for less. 3M is the manufacturer of the clearbra which has been used in the auto industry for years. I know of someone who completely covered his Lamborghini Gallardo in this stuff. (Cost him over $3000) Most only cover the front bumper, mirrors and about 6 inches of the hood where it's most likely to get chipped by small stones and such. If you call one of the authorized installers of the clearbra, they may have a small scrap piece to give you. BigV

Just a quick comment about the scuffed paint. I bought a Corbin seat and when I took off the factory seat there was a scuff mark on the tank where the tongue of the seat rested. Well since Corbin seats go to either side of the tank it has left this round scuff showing. Anyone know what kind of polish will take this out?? This clear on this bike is so HORRIBLE that I am scared to put any kind of polish to it. The rear fender already has chips in the paint on the lower ears and there are swirl marks throughout the entire bike. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

You can try ScratchX, but if the stock seat has been on for a while, I doubt you'll see lasting results. Mine was on for just a few weeks, and the ScratchX followed by a good wax seemed to help.

You could take the tank to your local detailer where they can try to polish out the scratches with a high-speed buffer. If the scratches aren't too deep, this will likely work.

You could take the tank to your local painter and just have the whole thing clear-coated.

Well before I go to a lot of trouble with my painter I will try the Scratch X and see if I can get the scratches out. After this season I will decide if I am going to keep the bike and if I am I will break it down for paint. Thanks for the advice.

Mine has gone beyond the clearcoat and paint to the base coat (pinkish color).

Lots of pitting as well.

Hey Giant,

What model of Corbin seat did this nasty thing to your ride?

Hey Giant,

The rumble seat. But I think it was more to the way the previous owner kept care of the bike, i.e. when cleaning it he probably never removed the seat. When I took it off there was a lot of dirt under it, and along the tank there was some grime. The rumble seat's leather where it comes against the tank is pretty tight, so anything that gets in there will cause some rubbing. I'll take a pic this week and post it so the rest of you can see what happens when preventive measures aren't taken.

Check online at chapparell here in ca. they have 2 types of clear plastic. One is a stick on and the other a static cling. Its listed under by electrical.
Do a Pn search at their website for
L246-1200 $11.00 static
L246-1214 $5.00 sticky clear vinyl (very hard to use) go with the static.
page 73-454 in their catalog
I did use the sticky stuff where my seat contacts underneath for protection.

Funny. I had a spot on my tank that was caused by the stock seat. There is a little bushing under the front where the seat extends over the tank. The rumble seat does not cover this because it does not extend up the tank but instead ends at the base of the tank. I have had no rubbing from my rumble seat. I heard lots of opinions on Corbin seats and thus far I find this seat superior to any other I have owned. I plan on a major ride - 10+ hours a day coming up in May. I will let you know my thoughts on how well it performed on a long ride at that point.
