I've read several posts on the Breakaway unit but found nothing on this site when I searched for The Throttler. The Throttler comes in chrome :D and when activated utilizes a ratcheting mechanism which allows the rider to easily and positively adjust throttle position up or down by about 2-3 mph. They only install at their factory or by an authorized dealer which, for this type of device, probably isn't a bad idea.

FYI, if you don't have an authorized dealer in your area and don't want to be without your throttle grip for a week or two you can always order an extra, send it to them, then simply replace the original when done. The only bad part is that the replacement part from Honda is about $100.

Feedback?

Here is the installation video for HD. Nothing on the web site for metric.

The installer has to drill into your throttle grip to install screws, and with a Dremel grinding wheel, smooth out the inside of the tube.

I have the breakaway and it is really nice. It is attached to the front brake so if you engage the brake it releases. It also allows you to increase and decrease the speed on the fly. Very easy to install and you can do it yourself. Go for the breakaway

I went against the crowd and ordered "The Throttler" which is manufacturered by 50's Boy. It was a tough decision because the Breakaway is manufacturered in my back yard (Portland, OR) and they offered to install it for free. I liked the fact that it is chrome although if the design sucked I certainly would have gone with the crowd. The Throttler uses a ball bearing ratcheting mechanism and works great. It holds throttle position very nicely but if necessary to let off the throttle you can simply override the ratchet. This takes very little pressure and feels very safe. I tried it riding at speeds from 30-80 and it performs nicely.

Before anyone gets all excited thinking that the only way to release the Throttler is by over powering the ratcheting mechanism...

The thumb switch is how to turn it "on-off" :biker:

The Throttler does not rub against your switch housing either. It utilizes a "foot" which attaches to the Throttler and has an arm wth a "U" shaped end to fit over the throttle tube.

I didn't see any pricing on the Throttler website. How much does it cost? Do they sell to individuals or do you have to use an installer? Install seems easy as long as they supply the base ring with the kit.
The website says it increases speed by about 2-3 mph per click, is that what you found? Seems like the only possible disadvantage is the inability to lock in a speed that falls between the 2-3 mph clicks.
Please post a follow-up with pics when you get yours installed

I'll find a flat road and try the clicks to see if the 2-3 mph is accurate and post a photo as well.

Did you try it on your bike or on another? Just wondering if you already have the Throttler on your Rune and if so could you post pics of the install and more in-depth riding impressions? Thanks in advance!

How was that ride? What are your thoughts on the Throttler? Was it 2-3 mph per click? Is the ratcheting smooth?
Pics and evaluation please :D

I use and like a $10 throttle rocker. I have no trouble riding all day with what I am using, however have not tried the kind that can be locked down and has a brake release switch. Is there anyone out there who switched from what I am currently using and sees the advantage to what is being advocated in this thread. :?:

Bill you can eat a sandwich, with the throttle hand light a cigar-rest your hand and if you'll be riding in a high traffic area of Radar cops you can lock in your speed, many more reasons then a wrist rest. I'm glad you had a nice venture at that Rally not so far away from all the Floridian Rune owners. Too bad if they all didn't go,that Rally; if Daytona doesn't watch out might just become bigger/Or the place to be. I think I'm hitting that one next year. What did you do for accommodations? Hey and thanks for the patch,It can wait till The Hoot. C-YA. dog

I fully tested "The Throttler" on my Rune yesterday on a 200 mile ride. If you want adjustability down to 1 mile per hour and plan to keep the throttle locked for miles then perhaps the Breakaway is better. However, if you want to be able to lock the throttle with approx a 2 mph adjustment capability then "The Throttler" is a great choice. Granted the Breakaway has the auto cancellation via applying the front brake. The Throttler, using a ball bearing ratcheting design is very easy to release the lock with the thumb switch or simply grab the throttle and back off. You only have to apply a slight amount of pressure to manually back off the throttle. I like that The Throttler is chrome vs. the Breakaway which is not. I don't think you can go wrong with either unit. The key is having one so you can easily take your throttle hand away from the throttle just like you do with your left hand. You can adjust your jacket vents, helmet vents, give someone the finger with your right hand (not to offensive I hope  ) or even pick your nose with the right hand if necessary. I think it is a must for anyone riding longer than 25 miles at a time. If you are a bar hopper then you don't need one...unless the bars are >25 miles apart :)

Thanks for posting the photo Jakesboss. It was $200 installed. I didn't want to be without the bike and, since there are no 50's Boy dealers in Portland, I ordered an extra throttle grip, sent it to them, they installed it, and sent it back. They are easy to work with and I am very happy with the functionality of The Throttler.

It must be said again---if you need to lock a very specific position perhaps the other unit will work better. However, I like the ratcheting design and chrome finish (of most of the unit) and it works great for me because I rarely lock my throttle longer than a minute or so.
