OOOOOOHHHHHH :o4: nice pics, BUT.
After I went down last year on the wing at 50+ MPH I cringe when I see people riding wearing shorts. I got quite a bit of road rash(no broken bones ) wearing genes and a jacket in the rain. I could not imagine what I would have gotten wearing shorts and a t-shirt.

A guy pulled up to me and held up his broken ankle and advised me to get some better ankle protection since he snapped his in 2 from a MC crash.
Our whole group out here wears shorts and tank tops all the time...I do think about it all the time...That is going down on the MC with shorts on.

Too many people doing stuff that I wouldn't dream of and get hurt and we all pay for it with increased insurance premiums. Ride without a helmet...you bet...at your own risk...not mine. While I am all for your right to choose a helmet or not, I was reminded of a bad choice a fellow church member made a year ago. Today in church I saw a man that used to be a very productive intelligent athletic contributor to our town struggle to get down the aisle of our church. He can't reason very well now nor does he have very good motor skills. This all happened when he had a motorcycle accident where he sustained a head injury. If he would have had a helmet on he would have walked away from the accident. I know that riding is dangerous and it is the risk we take every time we swing a leg over a bike but being safe is a choice.

Back before helmet law here in Calif. my friend and I never wore helmets on our Ninja's. My friend was in 2 accidents and both times for whatever reason he put on a helmet. He would have been likely killed or seriously injured both times due to the damage to his helmet. I witnessed one of the crashes from behind when he hit a bridge on a hair pin turn. His body went 10ft+ into the air and slammed head first onto the pavement at around 45 mph. He walked away totally unscathed. If it wasnt for the helmet I likely would have witnessed his death.

I don't want to beat this to death but.......in my business, it is extremely rare to see someone come through that was wearing a helmet. When you crack the old noggin the brain gets upset and starts to swell. We see alot of kids and young adults from ATV accidents that were not wearing helmets. The sad thing is that we see the aftermath of bad choices. We see the families that are left to pick up the pieces and try to go on with life. When you go to a funeral and see a 5 or 6 year old little girl or boy crying that their daddy is dead it will change your entire outlook on things.

i agree.... but we cant always just think about all the bad things like that, or you'll never enjoy riding.... i work for a law firm, and ive seen my fair share of pictures of cycle accidents in lawsuits, most would make you vomit.. there was one that i saw where a kid had a helment and full leathers.... was going around a curve (on a sport bike) went off the road and hit a tree... it was with so much force that his body literally "exploded" inside of the suit... anyway... i just mean we cant always dwell on the bad... we make a choice when we throw our leg over a bike, and we accept certian dangers...

Nice pictures Curt. Seems that you're really enjoying that ride. Nice choice of music and those bar ends look great, gotta get me some  I can see both sides of the protective clothing argument. I was only doing 35mph "I'm told" when I hit the car that pulled out at a junction. Had I not been wearing a helmet I'd have died. It's a legal requirement here in the UK to wear a helmet on a motorcycle, but I don't have to wear one on my Trike, but I do.
I believe that our lives are already mapped out for us and there is nothing we can do to change it's path, you just gotta enjoy it and deal with whatever it brings. Here endeth the lesson  :D

I agree, I hate wearing a helmet. I love the wind around and being able to hear everything. And as the weather warms......it makes it even more difficult to wear. However, I choose to wear one just in case of an accident. I never plan on having a wreck that is why it is called an accident. Life is about choices and with each choice you make there are consequences....sometimes good and sometimes bad.

Helmets are not required in Florida and I don’t wear one.
About a year and a half ago I rolled up to a stop light next to an ambulance with two attendants in the front.
While waiting for the light to change the driver rolled down his window and said, “Nice bike”, and I said, “Thank you”.
He then looked at the top of my head and with a big grin said, “Would you like for us to follow you”?

I will be first to admit that part of the reason I don't like wearing a helmet might very well be because i haven't found a helmet i LIKE yet.
So maybe we could turn this into a bit of a positive, and if you have a helmet you absolutely love, tell us what it is, and why you feel that way.

Learned to ride in CDN, helmet required for a long time now, I've never been able to adjust to not wearing one. I bought a half for riding around the block and a Caberg Justissimo (Italian) flip-up which you can remove the chin in a snap and it becomes a jet pilot helmet with an inside Visor Quick Release System , very, very cool, but kind of expensive and hard to find.
I had to try some other brand for sizing at my local shop and order online, No dealers in NC had to go to classiccruiser.com

I hate wearing a helmet, when they first ruled in the UK approx 35 years ago that they were a legal requirement, plus of course the inclement weather I stopped riding.
Living in Florida does have some advantages including the fact that you have a choice regarding helmet wear, plus of course the weather is conducive to riding in shorts, teeshirts & no headgear for over 300 days a year.
I have recently purchased a Bell Mag 8 open face helmet with integral flip up clear visor mainly in anticipation of forthcoming longer rides on my new Goldwing. Somehow I dont think I will wear it whilst riding the Rune, I just dont feel its that type of bike.
Weird...maybee, just an observation.

Not to keep the story going on helmets etc. but I have to admit I LIKE helmets - it is to me like when i played football. Just part of the equipment that makes motorcycling cool. I have 6 helmets - all different kinds. From a DOT half shell, 2 Carbon Fiber non DOT's to an ICON rubberized full face, a full face flip up and my new one:

This one I got a chrome face shield with and it looks radically cool when riding the Rune - like starwars. It is also the quietest one of all of them. I also like to ride bare headed and luckily I can do that legally in the neighboring states of Iowa and South Dakota. I admit to going skinhead on really hot days but 905 of the time I am covered.

I've already weighed in on the helmet debate, but riding without protection has other downsides. When I ran a bike shop, the worst riding injury (survived) I ever saw was a guy taking a bee in the eye at 60mph.
Leathers, which we all agree we want to be wearing when we fall off the bike, are rated by "drag distance". What do you suppose the drag distance of human skin is? And with enough momentum, do you think road rash stops with skin and muscle or does it give a nice sharp edge to that bone?

Paul...do the integrated glasses in those helmets flip up into the helmet for nite riding? Airoh helmets look just like Justissimo...are they affiliated other than both being Italian?
The integrated visor does flip up for night time riding, it's very handy. I don't think that Airoh and Caberg are the same company. Having looked at some of the Airoh helmet designs I'd say that their designs are far more radical.
The exchange rate is about $2 to the £1 at the moment. I but lots of things online from the US and even though we get stung with an import tax, it usually works out cheaper than buying it here in the UK. :?
Take it easy

I like this one with the chrome finish..I cant figure out the price since its in foreign currency.
If you have a look at this site, it has a currency converter on each page so it'll give you an idea of how much the helmet will cost in dollors. http://www.clubpromoto.co.uk/site/index.php

:D Your right, and wrong. Ev eryone should have the right to be safe or not. But when they don't show the mental cap. to make the right decision, someone with a little more smarts should make
that decision for them.. I have been riding for over 46 years and have helped pick up more than a few other riders off the road, with and without
the proper riding eq. each time reminds me to be as safe as I can be.
I say my prayers before and after each ride, and hope my fellow riders do the same. I don't want to get caught going down hard, all alone if you know what I mean.
Soap box stashed away. Ride safe, ride smooth. :D JolyRuneRider :D :D

Add me to the list of Riders who enjoy riding in shorts and a tshirt. Yes I know the points, and yes I do it anyway. I also seldom ride with a helmet. To each their own.
same here...

Rune005....no thats my garage floor...Good thing you cant see the 3rd car garage cuz thats where everything gets stashed. I got tired of cleaning debris from the expansion joints so I filled them and installed Vinyl squares. Now I fire up the leaf blower to blow out the garage.

Guys,
Sorry, I did not go back to this post for a while till now. I only made mention on the shorts and t-shirt. After I went down doing 55 mph on the Garden State Parkway I saved my helmet that I was wearing when it slammed onto the pavment hard the first time as I went down, then I rolled and bonked it 6 more times.
I am SURE I would not be writing this if I weren't wearing my lifesaving HJC 3/4 helmet.
Thanks for listening.
