Just wanted to bring this to your attention:

This Ebay seller has been selling one of the Kisan Signal Minders for the Rune every few weeks.

They are reported to bring the self canceling turn signal function to the Rune and also turn the turn signals into running lights. According to the manual, it is a direct replacement for the Rune's turn signal relay and the only wire that must be splced is to the brake light of the Rune. The self canceling timer of the device is suspended when the module detects the brake light is on. In addition, two small springs need to be installed in the turn signal switch to automatically bring the switch back to center.

IIRC, they list for $119 + S&H. This is listed for $64.95 with free shipping. The last two I've seen started for $59.95.

Edit: Some help for attaching the signal minder's red wire to the brake wire.

I bought one a couple of weeks ago and the product I recieved did contain the red wire to run to the brake wire and the two springs; however, there were no pieces of foam in with the springs.

The interesting part is that the instructions say that no splicing is required to convert the turn signals to driving lights. I had to splice two wires in on the Burgman 650. I also had to bypass the turn signal relay by cutting two wires.:x

This one says it is a plug and play. You remove the original relay, plug this in, and put it in the holder of the former relay.

You still have to tap the brake light if you want the timer / suspend function and you still have to insert the two springs in the switch itself.

Thanks,

One of my tasks tomorrow is to install this unit as well as a 12v power cord to the Kuryakyn pod.

I sent him a PM. The written instructions may be enough. TNX,

I think it's a great unit, but I hated the springs (both the coil and the foam). I run mine without the springs and like it much better. My wife likes it better on her bike as well.

If the foam cylinders I believe were just a touch smaller (diameter) , they would feel/work better. I've adapted to mine now, it did take some time.
When greybeard and I did his, we slightly cut the foam from a circular cross section to a slight D shape. That worked better.

After playing with greybeard's Signal Minder, I'll stick with the Honda flasher.

I spent too much time riding the Rune today to get the brake wire installed, but I did get the Kisan SM relay installed.

It seems to work fine with the one exception. Both turn signals work fine on the front and back of the cycle; however only with the right turn signal does the indicator light flash.

The dash indicator light has a dim glow all the time now and I expect this because the SM has turned the turn signals into a dual function system; turn signals and running lights.

It has a dim glow all the time and flashes brighter when the right turn signal is activated. There is no change when the left signal is activated. The left front and rear lights are flashing, but the indicator light is not changing.

I did install the ground wire to the engine block and the unit does not work at all without this ground.

Any ideas?

Edit: Seems like I had an older version. I spoke with Andy at Kisan and returned it for a newer model that does work with the Rune.

I left the blue jumper on the SM. The signal indicator light now has a dim glow all the time, but the light blinks much brighter with either direction.

I blew the 5 amp fuse and replaced it with a 7.5 amp fuse.

The two rear turn signals are now running lights and they flash whenever the brake lights are activated. Something like 3 quick flashes, two longer flashes, and then constant on until you release the brake. Reapplying the brake restarts the sequence.

I still need to replace the two turn signal bulbs with RED lights to be in compliance.

Mechanical work is always more fun when you can't feel you fingers.

I'll check. I did send an email to Kisan so should hear back Monday.

I contacted Andy and it turns out it is an older unit, but they offered two fixes.

They'll exchange it for a new unit or they will provide a jumper to make the single indicator light flash for either direction.

Seems fair to me.

Kisan sent 2 bulbs to greybeard to correct the following problem:

Everything works when the bike isn't running; the right side doesn't work when the bike is running.

Any idea what these things are supposed to do and where greybeard is supposed to install them? Changing bulbs seems to be a weird way to correct the above problem: it certainly wouldn't have been my first guess.

I think greybeard will have to do a little more digging with the Kisan tech guys. Maybe he can also find the earlier posts from LOV2KRZ.

I wonder if the increased voltage while running is causing the problem. I guess the first step is to confirm greybeard has the latest version of flasher. I thought the LED change in the indicator box corrected a partially lit turn indicator. Are the LEDs in the indicator box push-in like the pics or soldered?

If it isn't working by spring, we'll have to move it to my garage for some troubleshooting.

Now that I think about it I don't think I tried mine with the engine on!

I may have the same problem and don't yet know about it.

I remember reading that the indicator light might not be bright enough on the Rune and that another bulb might be needed once the SM was installed.

Andy told me I had an older unit since it did not have the blue jumper on it, but there was a mod that involved soldering a jumper across two of the wires.

He was supposed to call me back, but forgot so I contacted him and he suggested I send it in for a replacement or to let them modify it.

The only thing I can think of is an incandescent light bulb will light if the current flow is from either direction whereas I think an LED is directional so it only lights coming from one direction.

Perhaps this is a regular bulb or perhaps a dual LED designed to light with current flow from either direction.

You can always call and ask :bow1: Andy what up with this?

I like the part where he sent it in and they fixed it.

That's where the SM-3R is headed tomorrow.

Isn't flashing light in a wig wag fashion illegal unless it's on an emergency vehicle?:cop2:

I recommended that greybeard send the flasher back and ask for one that works.

Rune-2-da-nth,

How difficult was it to install the foam pads in the "turn signal switchbox"? Does anyone know if there is tutorial somewhere here? I did a search but don't know the correct term for the "turn signal switchbox"!:cus:

Gary, sorry to hear about the problems with the older unit. I think it'll be worth it once you get it all installed. Safer too if you can't remember to cancel your signals like me.

I'm posting this from memory, If I missed something---Please correct me......Thanks...

Rune-2-da-Nth,

Thanks for the detailed instructions. It's actually raining here in normally sunny SoCal so I have some forced garage time this weekend.

Can you describe the difference in feeling you think cutting the foam into a 'D' shape will make? What does it feel like with them uncut?
